Book Review: Finish What You Start by Peter Hollins

Are you the type of person who has a ton of ideas and rarely follows through on them?

Do you have a whole heap of unfinished projects lying around – in your house and garage that you simply never get to?

Are you the type of person who has a dozen half finished manuscripts on your laptop and even more online courses you bought but have never finished, or worse, even started?

Following through and finishing what you start are some of the most valuable skills you can have. They are a combination of traits that enable you to create the life you want – without having to compromise or wait.

Well it’s time for that to stop and for you to …

Finish What You Start: The Art of Following Through, Taking Action, Executing, & Self-Discipline.

In his excellent, practical and easily digestible book, Finish What You Start, Peter Hollins take us on a unique deep dive into the psychology and science of accomplishment, productivity, and getting things done.

In an amusing and glaringly obvious set of scenarios and examples, he takes a thorough look at why we are sometimes stuck, and gives detailed, step by step solutions you can start using today.

Every phase of finishing and following through is covered, and even productivity pros will be able to learn something new. I listened to the entire thing, while out for one long run. The only bummer was I couldn’t take notes as I went!

In my book review I focus in on:

  • Four surprising motivations that push us past obstacles.
  • How daily rules and a manifesto can help you achieve more.
  • Tactics to beating procrastination easily
  • How to dial up your internal motivation
  • How to beat distraction and stay focused on the task at hand!

Book Review: “Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World” by Cal Newport

If your mind bounces around all day like an energizer bunny, and you rarely feel you’re accomplishing anything on your to-do list, let alone moving forward on a significant piece of work, it’s time you learned how to go deep.

So what is deep work? Deep work is the ability to focus without distractions on a cognitively demanding task.

In other words, it’s the lost art of losing yourself in work that matters, and not getting distracted by your phone notifications, social media or multiple browser tabs. It’s about training the brain to embrace ONE thing at a time.

It’s brilliantly laid out in Cal Newport’s excellent book: Deep Work: Rules for Focused Success in a Distracted World a book about the science of productivity.

The book is split into two parts. The first explains what deep work is and different ways to do it. The second part shows us how to actually do it and make deep work a regular practice in our lives, so you can put it right into action.

Cal Newport is a computer science professor at Georgetown University who studies the theory of distributed systems, the author of six books, including, most recently, the New York Times bestseller, Digital Minimalism: Choosing a Focused Life in a Noisy World, and owner of his well-known Study Hacks blog.

This is definitely one of my favorite books this year and I’d recommend it for anyone who wants to work smarter and avoid distractions.

In his book he shares four ways to help us maximize productivity and rules to deploy more deep work in our lives. Watch my video for my full review and to learn these four methods.

The secret weapon to help you read more books in less time

If you’re like me you probably would love to take time out and read more often.

But these days curling up on a couch to read my fave business book seems like a luxury I don’t put aside time for.

So rather than give up on reading, why not go the audio route so that you can get out and do stuff while enjoying listening to a book.

Step in Audible from Amazon.

You can now listen and learn on the go, and make the whole experience highly enjoyable with an audiobook.

The first book I ever bought was Seth Godin’s Linchpin, and loved listening to his wise words when I was out running or at the gym. I could pause and go back and listen again.

Right now I’m listening to the awesome Mel Robbins The 5 Second Rule – at 1.5 X the speed!

It’s really cool to hear the author tell it in their own words, inflections and storytelling style.

Plus an audiobook doesn’t weigh anything and is easy to pack up when you’re on the move!

With Audible, you can sign up month by month or yearly and you get a certain amount of free credits – 1 credit = 1 free audiobook.

They have over 200,000 titles now so I think you’ll find what you’re looking for… including The Suitcase Entrepreneur by yours truly!

How to Stop the Comparison Game

Have you ever scrolled through, Facebook, Twitter or Instagram to see a friend or peer doing awesome things? Except, instead of feeling happy for them, you feel instantly envious or depressed? It happens to all of us, unfortunately, and it all has to do with this little thing called The Comparison Game.

Scrolling the Instagram feed has the ability to make me feel like I’m not enough, in an instant. So much so that I’ve stopped enjoying this app like I used to.

I value it as a connection and business tool, but I’m tired of seeing the perfectly curated photos that only show one side of that person’s life – the one that makes you feel like you’re inadequate and your life is dull or even sucks.

YOUR aim in life should be to be the very best version of yourself, by focusing on what you do best and love to do.

So why do we all consistently compare ourselves against others?

Why do we look at people who are 3, 5 or even 10 years ahead of us in business and in life and get completely dejected that ‘we’re not there yet’ or that we pale in comparison.

This destructive habit has to stop!

You can’t even begin to know what’s behind their journey, what it took for them to get to where they are now. But you can learn from them, and emulate the great things they do, so long as you don’t try to measure up against them.

Remember, there is always someone doing better than us in something but instead of comparing yourself, concentrate on where you’re at and what you’ve achieved.

In this video, I share:

  • Five ways to stop comparison game for good
  • Difference between competition and comparison
  • How to replace negative thoughts to positive thoughts
  • An exercise you can do to stop negative thoughts

Why you need your own Personal Assistant

Hiring a virtual assistant is one of the best investments you can make for your business to save you time and money.

But have you ever thought about making that same investment in your own life with a personal assistant?

Personal assistants are not just for the rich and famous. Imagine freeing up hours to work on your business or spend time with your family instead of taking care of personal tasks that you don’t enjoy doing?

A personal assistant can handle a lot of responsibilities that you can delegate to them. Hiring one will make a big difference in your life.

In this vlog, I share the reasons why a personal assistant is an absolute must for any entrepreneur, what tasks you can delegate and how much time a PA is going to save you!
