Embracing the Future of the Future with Frances Valintine

What is the future of the future? And how the heck can you be a part of it so that you’re not left behind in the past?

That is the topic of my conversation on this episode of the Untapped Podcast with the one and only Frances Valintine, founder of The Mind Lab & Tech Futures Lab.

Frances is one heck of a mover and shaker. And she believes that we’re living in a time of great advancement as well as rapid disruption. She believes that the progress and the ability to look forward and plan for tomorrow is essential for long term success.

Frances is at the cutting edge of what we need to do to stay relevant as we move into a new era filled with uncertainty as technology takes over our jobs allowing us to essentially tap into more of our human skills.

If you listened to Episode 32 – The Future of Work Is Learning, I shared what the future of work really is, the major trends and forces shaping it and why it’s more important than ever to become a lifelong learner and keep upskilling to remain relevant and ahead of the curve.

Frances takes us even further because she is living and breathing this. At the time of our interview, she had just finished up the Future of the Future conference that she hosted where she interviewed all these incredible people on stage.

What I love about Frances is that she’s extremely forward thinking by the way she looks at how we reinvigorate our existing skills, adopt new practices, and integrate people who think differently in our businesses.

As the founder and CEO of The Mind Lab & Tech Futures Lab, Frances works in the space between the whole ecosystem of learners from young children to experienced corporate leaders.

While Tech Futures Lab helps organisations and individuals to navigate the contemporary world of business, The Mind Lab was developed to empower students, schools, teachers and principals to develop contemporary knowledge and practical skills for today’s rapidly evolving world and the future of work.

She knows that our economic success has a greater reliance on people who can combine science, technology, design and creativity in ways that we are only just starting to realize.

So in our interview, we discuss a lot of those things. And I think you are going to find it fascinating. I hope it’s going to open your eyes, expand your mind, and really get you thinking about what role you are going to play in the future of work and just how you can thrive in it.

In this episode you’ll learn:

  • What the future of work looks like and what that means for you
  • Why reinvigorating your skills and learning new skills is vital now more than ever
  • How to thrive and remain relevant in the rapidly evolving world
  • Frances’ journey to become one of the most influential leaders in New Zealand

The Future of Work is Learning

The Future of Work is learning – what does that mean?

If you’ve been following me for a while, you know that I’m all about staying relevant and keeping up with the ever-changing world of the way in which we work and live.

The thing is, those changes are coming at us fast and many of the trends we see happening in the future of work are already here.

Robots and AI are already being used to automate and streamline jobs, and it’s predicated by the OECD that 14-30% of jobs as we know them will not even exist in the next 5 years.

So it’s more important than ever that we figure out how to ramp up our skills, particularly our uniquely human-centered skills, to stay relevant and be irreplaceable!

The good news is around 70% of new jobs will be created, most of which we can’t even predict yet. Crazy right?

That means by continuing to learn new skills and gain more experience, we have more chance of thriving in the future of work, rather than just surviving.

On today’s episode of Untapped, I’m sharing a recording of the talk I gave at an Inspire Group, an online learning and leadership company.

The purpose of this event was to inform our clients about what’s about to head their way and what they need to start thinking about when it comes to learning solutions for the future.

It was also a great way to showcase all the trends that are coming up and how the Future of Work IS learning.

In this episode you’ll learn:

  • What the Future of Work actually is
  • How automation can and will benefit us
  • How we can collaborate effectively with the robots
  • What changes and trends have already started to happen
